By most accounts Linus has seriously broken the concept of a stable
kernel with the latest series.  Alan Cox has been really scathing of
his behaviour.  There have been far too many fundamental changes in
the recent "stable" versions.

Avoid anything after 2.4.9 for now I think.  I tried upgrading
recently and it broke ALSA among other things.
