First, my apologies for sending that last email to the list.  I'm also
discussing my problem with someone very helpful on the Samba mailing
list who'd siggested a tcpdump to help diagnose the problem, and I
pasted into the wrong compose window.  :-(

What I meant to write here was a thanks, first, and a note that I tried
your suggestion, George, but it didn't fix the problem.  With file and
printer sharing removed, it fails much more quickly; with it added back
in it takes about a minute before it gives up and fails.  (And I see the
sort of tcpdump info that I accidentally posted here.)

If I get this sorted out, I'll post a summary of what the solution was,
just in case it's of use to someone else.
