Andre - my replies were generic and just tried to cover points to
consider (for anyone).

I have a "thing" about hot swap as I was once in a nsw gov dept where
they thought this whole hot swap thing would be a great way to backup
and save spending $$$$ on a new tape drive, which they badly needed.

So, in their brilliance, such hw was purchased and loaded with essential
stuff, allowed to stabilise and sproing.

First I was unpopular for suggesting it was a good idea to error the
drive first - "what fore, It is hot swap", <WRENCH> "Hey why has the
computer gone down?"

Okay, now we error the drive first, <WRENCH>, <INSERT> "Hey, why has the
computer gone real slow". - the computer gave priority to rebuilding the
failed drive.

Rebuild priority was adjusted to the other end of the spectrum, and took
all day to resync.

I was finally very unpopular for then asking for 4 months worth of
drives and a cabinet. "Why" Well, our major problem that we need to
recover something from 2-4 months back (It takes them this long to
relise it has gone missing).

"Mumble, mumble, mumble, get me prices of tape drive" {:-). I think the
hot swap device is still gather dust.

Any back up is better than no backup. Whatever works is good. My first
SOHO back system consisted of 400 5.25" floppies taking 30-40 floppies
each time. It was a Saturday chore once a month. Needless to say, with a
growing SOHO network, I learnt to appreciate tapes real fast. I'm also
hoping that CD drives are around for a few decades.
