i understand the rationale for going with an external modem, but 
i wanted to contain as much cabling as possible.

i picked up a lucent pci winmodem from everythinglinux.com.au for A$60
or so which works really well with red hat 7+

they also sell a more expensive pci modem which is not a winmodem, but
i took a chance on the lucent one and it worked without a hitch.
