I have also used a lucent winmodem that came installed on my HP (after
a lightening strike fried my external D-Link). It works well EXCEPT
there is some conflict between the modem and the serial port that I
have not sorted out.

Serial port works fine if used befoe the modem. After modem use, any
attempt to use the serial port freezes the system tight.
