If you are using XFree 4, you don't need xfs to get TrueType fonts.
I think that all you need to do is add a line like
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/truetype"
to your "Files" section of your XF86Config, as well as a
Load "freetype"
in the "Modules" section.
