All this black box is really is a 12volt (maybe a little higher) supply
across the phone lines with a resistor. It's just enough to place current
into the line so all you need to do is dial 0000 which is enough for the
other side to think it's getting ring tones and answers. I've done this
something like 10 years ago but like others have said, just use a scanner as
it's better/quicker than a 2/3 step process..

You can get little black boxes that fake a telephone call. I.e. they give a
dial tone and all you do is plug two modems/faxes into it and they dial each
other rather than an exchange that costs money. You'll just have to look
around for one. I've seen them advertised before but can't remember now. Go
to Dick smiths or tandy. maybe black box catalogue might help. I think they
have a website.
