Bingo! I was trying to remember what Anthony Rumble said the other day 
about his AMD hassles. It was something like the chipset of the Mobo 
drives the RAM too fast. The trick was to turn off AMD optimisation. This 
however did not affect the install itself. Maybe you could underclock the 
CPU for the install & dick around with the kernel compiling afterwards.
