Probably a dodgy simm, then. If you've got it in a higher slot (so
it's say providing 256->512MB, then it's not going to be taxed by an
installer. if you run a mem test program which checks the entire
512MB, you'll probably find you're getting errors. 

so i'd advise if a more detailed stress test turns up similar
findings, you return it, if you can, or chalk it up to bad luck.
