What had died was the latch part of the end of the network card - was
just sitting in the socket, but not hard enough to make consistent
contact. It was a comment from Dean that jogged the brain cells.

Most of my computers were recently vacummed out and the covers put back
on (after 12 months of being off) - it must have happened during this. I
just knew putting the covers back on was a bad move.
