Nope. By way of explanation - for those new to this thread - I have hda as
20 Gb Win98,
hdb as 10Gb Woody, and have added a clean 40Gb drive on a Promise Technology
Ultra100 TX2
controller. 'hda' has a lilo alias of '1', 'hdb' of '2'. My previous kernel
image ('3')
also does not load, but for unconnected reasons (I can provide error
messages if you wish).
It all started when I attempted to install Potato 2.2r4 on the 40Gb drive (a
process
I have done a few times) but the install disk did not recognise the drive,
assuming I was
installing onto 'hdb' and asking me how I would like to configure the swap
space.
I was told that the 2.2 kernel would not recognise Ultra100 (UDMA100)
controllers and
that I should upgrade. This I did, to the 2.4.14 kernel (apt-get ..etc) but
as I was
unfamiliar with the procedure it took me a while to get the best (?) image
and configure lilo.
It logged on normally for a while and recognised the blank 40Gb drive as
'hde', 'hdc' and 'hdd' being the CD-R/W and DVD drives. I was unsuccessful
in mounting 'hde' into /etc/fstab (I'm still
not quite sure why, but I've been working on it) and the next time I logged
on I started
getting the 'respawn' error message which has stopped everything in its
tracks.
When I try 'linux 1' at the lilo prompt I get a message that there is no
such designation
and that I should try TAB for a list - which brings up the familiar '1',
'2', and '3' aliases
and their labels ... in short.

I hope this background explains what I was getting at.

I knew it was something like that but could not find it in "DEBIAN GNU/LINUX
2.1 UNLEASHED".

I feel as though I'm retreating to one of the base-camps on Everest in
adverse conditions,
but thanks for showing the way.
