Hello All,

I am new to the world of Linux. Prior to Christmas I installed SuSE 7.3
Personal onto my Compaq Pentium III. And since then I have bumbled my
way around KDE and the file structure learning my way around. Just
after installation I found out my current modem was a winmodem, so I
recently purchased a NetComm Roadster II 56k USB modem. And as I was
told it would, SuSE correctly detected the modem when I went into YAST2
to do the set-up. But when I went to KDialer the modem would not dial.
I opened the Log to find that the second Modem Initialisation String
seemed to be causing problems (I was getting in a little over my head
now). So I went to the supplied CD and looked for an information file.
There were many and in one I happened along what appeared to be a
different 2nd Modem Initialisation String. I entered it and the modem
worked. I then left the computer and after 240 seconds on inactivity it
disconnected.

I came back 3 hours later to connect and... nothing. No matter how many
times I fired KInternet no connection. So I changed the 2nd Init String
no difference. I probed the hardware and when probed the modem supplied
a different 2nd Init String. So I changed the setting back to that, no
connection. I then changed it to the 2nd Init String that worked, still
no connection. So I rebooted, still no connection.

Does anyone know what is happening, being a newbie, I am quite confused.
I really want to embrace Linux and use it for everything I can, but I
am at a loss. Particularly since it worked and now it does not.

I am sorry to be a trouble, but I could really use some help.

Kind Regards
Paul Copeland
