The formal question is - What's the difference between user-mode and
kernel-mode PPPoE ? and which/what would be best suited for a server
environment providing always-on http, mail, ftp and dns services via
ADSL ? (I don't want to login as a user to bring up the ADSL).

>From what I gather, one is run in user-space and the other isn't. What's
the significance of that ?

There's not an abundance of documentation for this question. The kernel
source says PPPoE is still experimental for 2.4.x, and patches need to
be applied including patches to pppd.

I'm no kernel hacker, but I guess it would be easier for me to
understand user- and kernel-mode PPPoE if I knew what user-space/mode
and kernel-space/mode is (?).
