Hi Sluggers !
the culprit does not appear to be gdm.
I booted off the rescue floppy (2.2.19 kernel), used 'linux 1' to get into
runlevel 1, and
Eora:/etc/rc2.d# mv S99gdm s99gdm
init 2
whereupon it carried on with the boot routine until
Starting mail retrieval agent: system-wide fetchmail list not configured

When I tried the same with the 2.4.14 kernel it was simpler:
"Starting GNOME display manager
INIT:Id"1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel"
At the moment I am left with two unusable kernels on 'hdb', a clean
unconfigured 40Gb 'hde'
which only the 2.4.14 recognises, and the only working drive is 'hda'
running Win98 !
In short, I was not able to get into runlevel 2 and use 'dist-upgrade' to
fine-tune the
modules for 2.4.14 ... all I wanted to do at the start was to install Deb on
'hde' (aargh !).
Has anyone got any constructive ideas ?

P.S. (somewhat desperately) when is the next InstallFest ?
