Richard,
I would just use pppconfig on potato is pretty easy to use and makes it nice
and easy to just type 'pon' and it connects for you.
Then when you are happy with pon, in /etc/network/interfeces
put

iface ppp0 inet ppp

allows you to do ifup ppp0 instead of pon.

If you have left the provider name the default name of provider then the
above will work.

yeah so remove wvdial and just use pppconfig - its pretty straight forward.

btw I think there is a detach option in ppp and wvdial to get it our of
learning sort of mode...
