I totally agree with Jeff on this one. I've not found a mirroring package (DiskSuite, Veritas or alternatives) that recommends mirroring root. It is often way more hassle than it is worth (speaking from very bitter experience). Go hardware if you can (because you can easily break the mirrors) or have a standby disk rsync'ed and ready to go (or a standby machine).
