Well, if its running deb, did you do the other thing I suggested (dpkg
-L | egrep bind)?

If you want a real hack, try this
tgreen@flute:~$ strings /usr/sbin/named | egrep version | less
dns_db_newversion
dns_db_closeversion
dns_db_currentversion
versions
dbversion != ((void *)0)
version
IXFR version not in journal, falling back to AXFR
        version "9.2.0";
version


Once again shows the version is 9.2.0, though I'd recommend the dpkg
option first
