True

Most of the data has been acquired over the last few decades by the
Central Mapping Authority, the Lands Department and, out west, by the
Australion Gelopgical Survey Organisation. We have already paid for the
data collection and much of the map data processing through our taxes.
As someone has already mentioned this is why the US make the map data
available to the public. Even packages such as GRASS (A GIS package that
runs under Linux) are available to the public as it was developed by the
military and hence with US taxpayers money (a la Internet).

Go straight to the source of the map data and ask for a free copy :-)

Best of luck :-)
