yes they start with a "." and are thus hidden unless you use the -a 
option. "ls -a /root" this is of no consequence however.

OK there's basically several X-Servers (programs that interface to your
screen). It may well be that the config program decides to use one that's
not installed. You should look at installing a package called XFree86-SVGA
(it is on RedHat anyhow) as this will work with just about any video card 
in a compatability mode. Work now, play later <nods>.
