I can write word XP/2000/97 and 95 and 6.0 just fine with my Openoffice 641C. I don't know when you last check but the .doc filters work quite well in my experience. - Even to the extent that I have been able to repair a corrupted word document by opening it in Writer and saving it back to word - it lost some formattting (it was a complex document) but it was able to be opened into Word again.
