Hi Scott,

        A few months ago a seagate disk on my home pc
        gave a similar 'status error' and it also had this
        strange grating sounds. It would recover after
        a few seconds of retryinbg but this length grew longer 
        and longer ... until one day ...

        It is possible that the disk is developing bad sectors
        where the fs info is kept. It may be a good idea
        checking for bad sectors.
