for some reason I am unaware of, in debian I've always had to create that /dev/mouse link manually. If it's a serial mouse you've got then it's /dev/ttyS0 or S1 (depending on which serial port you plugged it into) so just create the link yourself: "ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/mouse" and X should start.
