Try adding the line:

su - username -c "startx"

to the file /etc/rc.d/rc.local, and make sure that your run-level default in
/etc/inittab is run-level 3.  

To ensure this is the case, you should have a line like this in /etc/inittab

        id:3:initdefault:

this works for me on Redhat 7.2
