Look at gdm & gdmconfig. I have set up the computers for school to
fire up and automatically log on to 'student'. It is all controlled and
'standard' to do this.
If you are using debian you may need to change
/etc/X11/default-display-manager with
which gdm > /etc/X11/default-display-manager
