probably traditional proxy auth using squid's ncsa module. read your squid.conf and look for a tag called "authenticate_program" for a little more info about it.
this is the 'neatest' way to setup authentication for a small group of people, and isn't too hard to configure either.
 
if you mean neatest in terms of adding/removing/updating credentials on a large number of users then yu might want to consider a database based authenticator....this could be alot harder to configure and get going, but would make it easier to maintain in the long run.
