thanks Howard, you're  right.
 I have  a big drive with free space in a large extended partition.
I have already made the partition (hda10) with fdisk. Obviously there 
are already partitions in the extended partition. I just want to make a 
file system on hda10, and since the rest of the partitions are ext3......
I'm going to write all my emails off-line from now on. It's amazing how 
writing things down clarifies them in the mind!!! I was reading the name 
section in the man, noting second, but then reading 'file system' as 
'partition'. one does feel stupid sometimes.
