How long is a piece of string?

The term "56k modem" is a bit of a misnomer. What it really means is "You
might get a 56k connection in one direction if your line is perfect,
prefereably digital all the way, and the moon is in the right phase".

You're more likely to get a 46 or 48k connection which, by the time you
add compression to the mix, might give you a total of about 55 or 56k if
you're lucky.

So, getting 5.5K per second indicates a pretty good connenction.

The best I've ever managed is around 6K per second - but that was on a
damn good line, with an excellent modem.
