oooh really? i didn't know that....  I started out using RH7.0 but switched 
allegiance (such as it is) to MDK a year or so ago - it just seemed to be a 
better out-of-the-box install for my servers. I've hardly touched it as a 
desktop.. apart from on my dual boot laptop where i couldn't get the audio 
driver to work so sort of gave up on it. I'm a command line guy when it 
comes to linux... Where I need GUI I use OSX :-)

It's like this, actually ... Windows keeps me in a job, Linux keeps me 
sane, and OSX makes me blissfully happy. (now there's a bumper sticker for 
you :-)

But seriously. Back to the RAID issue - having read around (and 
particularly the well written http://linas.org/linux/raid.html ) i've 
concluded that for the small site in question, money for RAID would be 
better spent on external backup of a journalling FS...  many thanks to 
those who responded so quickly though.
