G2D is awesome! The whole look and feel is much more professional than 1.4. You can still run 1.4 apps as well. Check out Jeff's Garnome build system for Gnome2. I don't think there's a setting but you can use the middle mouse button to drag them along to where you want. Actually, there is a setting for pushing/swapping icons when you move them. This might let you push them all along. Right click on the panel and choose ?Global Prefs.
