G2D is awesome!  The whole look and feel is much more professional than
1.4.  You can still run 1.4 apps as well.

Check out Jeff's Garnome build system for Gnome2.  Works a treat but
it's a large download (~300Mb from memory).

Not quite sure what you mean by the applet panel.  Gnome has panels (the
things that look like a toolbar that hold things for you.  Applets a
little "running" icons ie they're active e.g. processor monitor. 
Launchers are just shortcut button to run something else.

I don't think there's a setting but you can use the middle mouse button
to drag them along to where you want.  Actually, there is a setting for
pushing/swapping icons when you move them.  This might let you push them
all along.  Right click on the panel and choose ?Global Prefs.
