Sent this out last night, but just noticed I'd only sent it only to Marty and not to the Slug list proper. Have made progress in reproducibility, but not enough to say 'consistently reproducible'.
Thanks to Conrad for the Linux Audio Quality HOWTO pointer. I've come to agree with Jamie that it isn't the mouse - I think the intermittent timing of it lead me to make that guess. (i.e. often was doing something mouse related when sound stopped/started.) --Tom -----Forwarded Message----- Thanks Marty and Jan, Just spent the evening watching TV (just to troubleshoot of course) and the problem was between intermittent and extremely intermittent instead of the other night's fairly common. To Jan's email, 1) yes it is a TV tuner card with a cable connecting the 'audio out' of the tuner card to the 'line in' of the sound card. Lots of jiggling shows it isn't the physical connection. 2) Believe it or not, I've not played around with mp3's - I'll try that next. 3) Regarding screen changes, while writing this email I got xawtv to lose sound for the first time in the past hour, and *this* *time* (i.e. not true in the general case, though I *have* seen the behaviour before) somehow I had 'pulsating' redrawing of all my windows happening. But no, I did not notice that the TV window title was changing. To Marty's email, thanks for the /proc/interrupts tip - it showed that I do not have a conflict. (I love the /proc file system - just wish I could remember it's there when I need it.) All in all, so far I am completely unable to reproduce this reliably, which is what I'll try to do first.
