Ok I'll bite what's the logic behind this in terms of improving the
throughput? do you mean the modem on the Linux box, or on the
Windoze client (the dial-up box).

Incidently the data lights on the modem and the monitor program in
kppp indicate that the modem is stopping starting a lot when
transmitting. Given that I'm just doing tcp/ip sessions between the
two machines, eg ftp, why wouldn't TX & RX be on nearly 100% of the
time?

Otherwise somehow today it seems better, not great but better,
2.8Kbs today.
