Err... RTL8139s suck ass.  badly.

They work, but thats about it.

We've had cases of doubling our max-sustained transfer rate by
replacing an rtl8139 with a better card (a 3c905c in the most recent
instance).

If you want a good, cheap card, steer towards the Netgear FA-310TX
(which are available again last I heard).  They're based on the LiteOn
PNIC chipset which is one of the many Tulip clones.  Expected price is
around the $40 mark.

Both my home gaming boxes (PIII/733s) use FA-310TXes and I've had no
problems getting them to work under Lin2.4 - I do recall some
difficulties mid-2.2 however.  I'm pretty sure 2.2.20 works though.
