I consider myself a newbie, even though I've been playing with various linux distros for some time now.

I currently have Mandrake 9.0 installed on 2 PC's (AMD K6 and Athlon based), and have most things working (finally sorted out Lexmark printer recently).

I have recently been trying Knoppix October Linux Format DVD issue) , and DemoLinux (from Dec UK's Linux Format DVD issue), and today installed Lycoris/LX (from current issue of Australian PC User).

Knoppix is excellent, though any system changes save to a floppy, which is a problem for my Athlon system as I must use a boot floppy as my CDRW and DVD are attached to the mobo's RAID IDE connectors - hence unable to boot them from Bios.

DemoLinux, on the other hand, saves changes to 2 files on the system hard drive (either Windows or Linux partitions), and these two files can easily be deleted or transferred to another disk.(similar to Suse Live demo CD).

Demolinux also includes both Gnome and KDE, and, if using Gnome, its' panel includes separate icons for Gnome and KDE menus, which I think is a good innovation.

Both Knoppix and Demolinux are Debian based and both are (supposedly) installable to hard disk - something that I will attempt in the near future, when I have time.

Lycoris had problems in creating a rescue floppy. I tried 4 different floppies, attempted to format them as Dos and ext2, and got nowhere fast, just beating the crap out of my floppy drive while "installing system files" - something apparently wrong with Lycoris, admittedly its beta 6.2 (I think)

Anyhow, if a demo distro is to be distributed to real newbies, I'd personally recommend Demolinux, due to it having both Gnome and KDE, and to its saving changes to hard disk.

Both DemoLinux and Knoppix seem to be a good way to experience Debian to me.

Just my 2 cents worth.

By the way, the DVD issue of PC Plus #195 (Dec 2002) includes isos for the first 3 CDs of Debian 3.0
