Is it actually possible to download ringtonesIm in the process of trying to do this using BlueZ (Bluetooth). Its ugly but getting there. Once it works Ill post to the list a URL. James Gregory is also looking in this area.
and java apps from Linux to a nokia phone?
Using usb or bluetooth? Has anyone actually
done this?

You are looking for newer phones that run java games or more specifically J2ME. Many of the current Nokia line including the 6310i, 7650 run J2ME. My Sony-Ericsonn P800 runs J2ME and PJava which is more powerful. If youve got the dosh, get a P800 or 7650.out of the net. I've come across remarks that seem to imply that you have to phone your provider to get them or something. Best sites so far seem to be http://ncsp.forum.nokia.com/ http://www.microjava.com/
Unfortunately Sony-Ericsonn software only works on guess what OS and on that, even only Win2K and later!! So Im battling to get to the phone via BlueTooth. Everythinglinux provided me with a USB Bluetooth adaptor and excellent help. (Thanks Anthony & Grant).
Here are some URLs for you:
http://mobile.linux.pt/p800/ http://wireless.java.sun.com/midp/articles/bluetooth1/ http://bluez.sourceforge.net
If you have Mandrake 9.1, installing the software and making it works a treat. You should then only have to service bluetooth start and insert the dongle.
My fav use for the thing so far if I get it going is to control XMMS from the phone, including reviewing/selecting playlists all via bluetooth. Someone in the UK did this on a siemens!
My primary task however is to get evolution syncronising via syncML somehow.
That was probably my talk. You can develop J2ME on Linux quite easily. Once Ive got bluetooth I can upload to the phone with no Optus charges!
I want to own the phone, I don't want it to own me.
Regards, Matt
PS. I remember attending a slug talk on java development on linux for mobiles -- I tried to use the slug list search function but it has me completely baffled. (e.g. search the announce list for java comes up with 2 messages, one of which doesn't mention java at all)
PPS. If you think this is better off on slug-chat feel free to bounce me there.
