I've just worked out how to get my contacts data from Mozilla's address book to my LDAP respository without running cryptic slapadd/ldapadd type tools. It's all possible with Evolution.
First export to LDIF from Moz/Netscape.
Then Import the LDIF file in Evolution. I tried to create a new folder under local folders called 'Imported Contacts' of type 'Contacts'. I imported the LDIF into that but they ended up in the Local Folders / Contacts folder anyway! Still at least they made it. To get them into my LDAP contacts folder I just click on my LocalFolders / contacts and drag/drop them onto the LDAP contacts in the 'Other Contacts' folder.
As noted before, Evo supports writing as well as reading the data so other users can also update the centralised address book if permitted.

Now for short exercise, try doing that on the 'MS Windows' platform without spending a Motza on Exchange.

PS I'm using Evo 1.2, Moz 1.3 openldap 2.0.27
