Thanks, Mike (and James), you were both quite right.

Probably I did force the install, a long, long time ago.  Gradually I
learned not to do things like that.

Your advice has helped me get a step closer - thanks again.
Plus I've learned another useful option to rpm.  (By golly that man
page is hard to read.)
