hi ken

i m new to linux myself so u need to pardon my rather amatuerish attempt here

i did have problems logging onto my ISP using mandrake 9 and a dialup account
and this was mostly due to me installing too many options in the first
instance and than not reading the errata on

http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/90errata.php3

part of which said ...

"....
Error scenario: You have an ethernet card for the local LAN and a modem for
internet access and you can't reach the internet.

Why: Drakconnect wrongly asks for a gateway, and ppp can't set your modem
connection as the default route.

Solution: As root, edit /etc/sysconfig/network and manually remove the GATEWAY
entry.
..."

of cos .. i dunno if that is really ur problem as i m only guessing at ur
setup here ...

unfortunately i can't help u with the firewall setup in mandrake 9 as i do not
use it.. maybe when i get better at this linux thang i'll check it out ..

as others before me have stated.. a firewall is probably best served using a
dedicated machine ... and this i have done so using smoothwall... of cos ..
it is only very very basic .. but it'll do for the time being.. i can't wait
until i m good enuff to "roll my own" :))

hope this helps u a bit

m
