mplayer handles it for me (mind you, I've done it from a terminal

I'm running MPlayer 0.90rc5-3.3 and have all the codecs from the
MPlayer site downloaded.
Perhaps you could try downloading all the codecs from the MPlayer web
site and recompiling?
