teraterm also does telnet and ssh, and 
I find it easier to live with.

(puttys configuration screen is
infuriating)

But teraterm's ssh support is an
external add-on, and it only does
ssh version 1 if I recall correctly.

Still telnet should be good enough
for you, and it puts less of a load
on the client and server than ssh.
