I would go for option two, if there are no drivers that work in OSS or
ALSA.

Mainly since, from experience, compaqs seem to be a real pain sometimes.
(Weird hardware, etc.)

You can get pretty cheap creative-128 pci cards from the computer
markets or your local (non-dicksmith,tandy,etc. for rip-off reasons)
computer store.
