Explore Your Inner Einstein at a Top Science Museum!
Sitting through an earthquake, petting a dinosaur and flying through
the solar system. These are just a few of the exciting experiences
that await visitors at three of the top science museums in the
country: the Science Museum of Minnesota, Carnegie Science Center, and
Orlando Science Center . Chances are you won't have to drag the little
ones by the hair to engage them with the exhibits found here. More
likely, you'll have to cajole them to leave at closing time. Come
along as we explore science at its most fun and fascinating.
Science Museum of Minnesota
St. Paul, Minnesota
Sure, it's cold in Minnesota, but the recently renovated science
museum's eight acres of indoor space will have you and your traveling
companions working up a sweat in an effort to see one fascinating
exhibit after the next. Kids morph into mini scientists in the Cell
Lab of the Human Body Gallery, where they can examine the pumping
mechanism of the 100-foot-long Bloodstream Superhighway (a tube filled
with a flowing blood-like fluid) and learn about genetics, cell
biology, physiology and lots more. A move to the Dinosaurs and
Fossils Gallery and visitors transform into paleontologists.
Interactive exhibits and fossil displays of prehistoric specimens wow
at every turn. Treasured specimens include the 82-foot-long
Diplodocus, the largest dinosaur at the museum, and the Triceratops,
one of only four mounted real specimens in the world. And the
Mississippi River Gallery makes use of its location overlooking the
awesome river to teach potential Tom Sawyers all about the power of
Ol' Miss, the largest river in North America. A museum store and
several restaurants are available for your shopping and dining
pleasure. For more info visit http://www.smm.org/.
Carnegie Science Center
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Perhaps the main reason the Carnegie Science Center is one of the top
science museums in the country is due to Mother Nature. Well, sort of.
In the SciQuest interactive gallery, the basic principles of the
forces of nature, the physics of flight, and the fundamental
characteristics of sound, light, and other electromagnetic waves are
taught through experience. Kids may not care about theory, but you
better believe they get excited about sitting in a "diner" and living
through an earthquake--shaky surrounding, seismic waves and all. And
who wouldn't enjoy putting on an engineer's cap to try and build a
structure that can survive a trembler? Creating a four-foot tall
tornado and spinning your own hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico are also
a scream. So many other interactive galleries from Exploration Station
to Miniature Railroad to Seascape to Sportsworks are filled with
similarly engaging and educational experiments and exhibits. This
place is filled with so much learning you may have to come back for
Day Two. A shop and restaurant are featured. For more info, go to
http://www.carnegiesciencecenter.org/.
Orlando Science Center
Orlando, Florida
Sure, there may be a few distractions in the area--from cuddly
six-foot animal characters to super-duper rollercoasters. But with
four floors of exciting hands-on experiments and exhibits, the thrills
at the Orlando Science Center rival the accouterments of any amusement
park. What kid wouldn't give up a ride on a carousel to experience a
tour of the solar system, discover the secrets behind lasers, or hang
off the side of a building? Indeed, the charm and brilliance of this
museum is the creative way it makes science so accessible and fun,
bringing our inner Einsteins to the fore. These rich interactive
experiences are brought to visitors via Wired Science kiosks that
utilize sound, graphics, animation and video. Head to the BodyZone to
put a skeleton together and learn about how the brain functions
through your nose, and visit DinoDigs and view real-life dinosaur
fossils in their diverse natural settings. Along with the permanent
exhibits, new programs are added on a regular basis. Food and cool
souvenirs are available in the museum store and restaurant. For info
go to http://www.osc.org/.
For more details about Orlando's fabulous attractions and fall events
visit http://www.orlandoinfo.com/promo/dollar/.
As an added incentive for consumers visiting the Web site, starting
this fall the one millionth person to visit the Official Orlando Web
site will win an Ultimate Orlando Family Vacation, including round-trip
airfare for 4 on AirTran Airways, a 7-night stay at the Radisson
Barcelo Hotel Orlando and $1,500 to be used at Orlando's Official
