Just for everybody's interest: I had tried the Outlook->outport->evolution to no great success- the instructions at evolution said to use the file import, though when I tried the files weren't recognised properly. (maybe I'm stupid enough to have missed something??) Though if I did export individual Vcards I could theoretically import them one by one. Thunderbird's CSV import is also flawed as it will not allow for enough fields that one needs to even get the email address.
The solution was to CSV out of outlook and use Kmail's (quite comprehensive) 'import fields' function. Although Kmail wasn't my first choice- it seems to work well. Oh yeah, thanks for those who responded. Even with the flames- I hereby promise only to submit emails in plain text from now on! Now I've got to go and convert all the machines in this room over (big task)!
