Apologies for the "how about a different piece of software" solution, but...
If all you need is an MTA that can send to a smarthost, you could use one of
the many designed specifically for that, instead of a full-blown MTA such as
sendmail.

A really good example is nullmailer. You just tell it your smarthost, and a
few other parameters, and that's all it will do. :-)
