Hi all,
sorry for the off topic post, but I thought I would ask the opinions of like minded people.
I am moving to Sydney in about a week, and am looking for a bank, telco and ISP.
from?
I have looked at Commonwealth Banks site, but it does not render properly in Konq or Moz, so I am going to presume that their internet banking doesn't work properly either.
So are there any other banks you would reccommend that have excellent electronic facilities. (I currently do 99.99% of my banking electronically. EFT-POS, CC, Internet, little cash, no cheques)
I use Firebird and it renders fine. I use commbank all the time without a problem.
How about Telcos? I have been looking at Optus, any problems with them? What about Telstra? All I really need is a phone and someway of connecting a cable/ADSL/DSL modem. (Maybe some Digital TV in the future?).
Either telco-wise. There are a number of other telco companies that can offer cheaper rates depending on your usage type - almost all use Telstra lines though.
I wouldn't use Telstra for internet as they are usually the most expensive, but that may have changed recently as I haven't looked for ages. I also wouldn't rate their support terribly high either (dealt with them on a number of occasions and very unimpressed).
And ISPs. I want to get some form of high speed internet. I currently have a cable modem, fixed IP, reverse DNS, 256kbps/128kbps. With a 100G local traffic cap and 10G international traffic cap. The cable modem kinda acts like a bridge. (IP is on the machine the modem is connected to, not the modem).
Is there something like this here? Does it depend where you live? Who gives the best service? Who do you use? Why?
If you're after cable then you'll need to pick a cabled area to live. Likewise with ADSL - pick an area near (within 4k I think although I have heard this may be changing soon) of an exchange. ADSL seems to be more popular. Plans vary widely. Check out

Also, most do not seem to offer static ip in there base plans. TPG do, but their routing is via US so ping times are a little slower to local (Oz) sites. This could well have changed of course, as I said I haven't looked in awhile. Best bet is to checkout the web site above.
Personally I use Internode and would highly recommend them. The service is great as is their customer/technical support. They are happy to support and use linux - none of this "we only support windo$e".
Thanks for all the help! Looking forward to arriving in Sydney.
