First check that your resolv.conf contains the correct nameserver entries.

Currently i'm sharing an internet connection with a windows machine over
dialup. I was receiving these messages, but since this is only a temporary
situation, i applied the following hack to my sendmail configuration. 
Note that this is not a permanent solution.

FEATURE(`accept_unresolvable_domains')
