I think it has to do with mixing shared libs with a static lib (libz.a)

You could build libz yourself as shared.

PS. Don't read the following since you asked not to receive it :-)
        Get your friendy admin to install the Sun package
        SUNWzlib, which provides a shared zlib. (assuming Sol8 or better)
