Someone suggested this on IRC too. In the end I decided that building either subversion or arch on this machine, given that both their build processes break, is too much work. In particular, it appears that subversion is only something you can use if you can get pre-built packages for your system. I don't know how true that is for arch, but I don't think I'm going to continue fiddling with its build process either. So CVS it is.
