Yes you normally need some kind of computer.

Yes, or "programming environment of your choice" since it won't be
exclusively C hacking. It's Debian bug squishing, but you could *at
least* generate patches on distro-of-your-choice.

Check http://debian.slug.org.au/events/detail.html?id=123 -- it doesn't
look like the talks are set for specific times.

Codefests are generally laid back.

It would probably save you something like 10 minutes assuming you can
get a train back to Redfern fairly quickly (normally OK since most
suburban trains stop at Redfern).
