Sluggers,

(getting broadband on in next few weeks, currently not subscribed).

Got a couple of video problems, hoping someone can help me out.

I've installed Fedora Core on a machine with an intel i740 video card.
With the 1024x768 x 24 bit colour everything works great except when I try to run VMware. When VMware tests the screen it locks up the X server or crashes it, and often I have to reboot to get the box back.

Using startx I captured this output (not much help I know)

  Fatal server error:
  Caught signal 11.  Server aborting

...(blah blah please send bug report etc Ok Ok I will)....

  Window manager warning: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer)
  on display ':0.0'.

If I change to 16 bit colour then the Xserver doesn't crash but then when moving windows or launching applications the mouse leaves a trail about 1cm square around the mouse, I.E the screen doesn't refresh properly.

Changing the resolution doesn't have any effect on either problem only changing the display depth. The mouse problem also happens at display depth 15. X won't start at display depth 32.

The mouse is a PS2 wheel mouse, XF86Config is;

  Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier  "Mouse0"
        Driver      "mouse"
        Option      "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
        Option      "Device" "/dev/psaux"
        Option      "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
        Option      "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
  EndSection

Video card entry in XF86Config;

  Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Videocard0"
        Driver      "i740"
        VendorName  "Videocard vendor"
        BoardName   "Intel 740 (generic)"
  EndSection

The /var/log/Xfree86.log doesn't capture the crash. But the load of the module is;

  (II) LoadModule: "i740"
  (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/i740_drv.o
  (II) Module i740: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
        compiled for 4.3.0, module version = 1.0.0
        Module class: XFree86 Video Driver
        ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.6

VMware is version 2.0.4 1142 (old I know but works fine otherwise). I have run this version of VMware on RH9 on an nvidia card with no problems but on RH9 on this i740 card it exhibits the same problems as with Fedora core.

Many TIA's

P.
