Sorry I don't use palm but have you had a look at your /var/log/messages
when you place the palm in the cradle?

it should give you some hint as to have /dev you are using.
What kernel version are you using? you might have some USB issues.
Do you need to add something into /etc/hotplug ?
I know that I had a bit of stuffing around when it came to Mandrake
and my Ipaq.
